The ruling on celebrating the Prophet's birthday and other mawlid celebrations

Question: All praise be to Allah, and may salah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and companions, and whoever follows his guidance.
As for what follows: the question has been repeatedly asked by many about the ruling on celebrating the birth of the Prophet , and standing for him during that, and offering him the greeting of peace, and other things done at the mawlid celebrations.

Answer: The answer is that it is not permissible to celebrate the birthday of the Messenger it, nor other than it; because that is among the innovations introduced into the religion; because the Messenger did not do it, nor did his rightly-guided caliphs, nor any others among the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, nor those who followed them in righteousness during the excellent generations, and they were the most knowledgeable of people regarding the sunnah, and the most complete in love for the Messenger of Allah and following his law by those who came after them, as it has been established from the Prophet he said: Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which is not part of it, it is rejected. meaning: it is rejected and returned upon him. And he said in another hadith: Adhere to my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs after me, cling to it and bite upon it with the molar teeth, and beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation (bid‘ah) and every innovation is misguidance..
These two hadiths contain a stern warning against introducing innovations and acting upon them. Allah, the Exalted, has said in His clear Book:
What Allah gave as booty (Fai') to His Messenger (Muhammad) from the people of the townships, - it is for Allah, His Messenger (Muhammad), the kindred (of Messenger Muhammad), the orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), and the wayfarer, in order that it may not become a fortune used by the rich among you. And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.
Qur'an 59:7 — trans. Hilali & Khan
And He, the Mighty and Majestic, said
Make not the calling of the Messenger (Muhammad) among you as your calling of one another. Allah knows those of you who slip away under shelter (of some excuse without taking the permission to leave, from the Messenger). And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements, etc.) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant, etc.) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.
Qur'an 24:63 — trans. Hilali & Khan
And He, Glorified is He, said:
Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.
Qur'an 33:21 — trans. Hilali & Khan
And the Most High said:
And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.
Qur'an 9:100 — trans. Hilali & Khan
And the Most High said:
Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al-Maytatah (the dead animals - cattle-beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah, or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., or on which Allah's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering, and that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns - and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal - unless you are able to slaughter it (before its death) - and that which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on An-Nusub (stone altars). (Forbidden) also is to use arrows seeking luck or decision, (all) that is Fisqun (disobedience of Allah and sin). This day, those who disbelieved have given up all hope of your religion, so fear them not, but fear Me. This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin (such can eat these above-mentioned meats), then surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Qur'an 5:3 — trans. Hilali & Khan

And the verses concerning this meaning are many, and the introduction of such mawlids implies that Allah, glory be to Him, did not complete the religion for this ummah, and that the Messenger, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not convey what the ummah ought to act upon, until these later people came and introduced into the shariah of Allah what He had not permitted, claiming that this brings them closer to Allah. This, without doubt, involves grave danger and constitutes an objection against Allah, glory be to Him, and against His Messenger and Allah, glorified be He, has perfected the religion for His servants and completed His favor upon them.
And the Messenger has delivered the clear message, and has not left a path leading to Paradise, nor one that distances from the Fire, except that he made it clear to the ummah, as is established in the authentic hadith on the authority of Abdullah ibn Amr (subhanahu wa ta'ala) He said: The Messenger of Allah said : Allah never sent forth a prophet but it was incumbent upon him to guide his nation to the best of what he knew for them, and to warn them against the worst of what he knew for them. Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih.
And it is known that our Prophet He is the best of the prophets and their seal, the most complete of them in conveying the message and giving sincere counsel, and had the celebration of birthdays been part of the religion that Allah, Glorified is He, is pleased with, the Messenger would have made it clear to the ummah, or he did it during his lifetime, or his Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, did it. Since none of that occurred, it is known that it has nothing whatsoever to do with Islam; rather, it is among the innovations against which the Messenger from which is his ummah, as previously mentioned in the two preceding hadiths, and there have come other hadiths with a similar meaning, such as his saying In the Friday sermon: Now then, verily the best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ. and the worst of matters are the newly invented ones, and every innovation is misguidance Narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih.
And the verses and hadiths on this subject are numerous. A group of scholars have explicitly condemned the observance of mawlids and warned against them, acting upon the aforementioned evidences and others. Some later scholars, however, differed and permitted them if they did not involve any reprehensible matters, such as excessiveness regarding the Messenger of Allah ، and the mixing of women with men, the use of instruments of amusement, and other things disapproved of by the pure Sharia, thinking that these were among the good innovations.
The legal principle is: to refer what people dispute over to the Book of Allah and the sunnah of His Messenger Muhammad As Allah said (subhanahu wa ta'ala):
O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger (), if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.
Qur'an 4:59 — trans. Hilali & Khan
And the Most High said:
And in whatsoever you differ, the decision thereof is with Allah (He is the ruling Judge). (And say O Muhammad to these polytheists:) Such is Allah, my Lord in Whom I put my trust, and to Him I turn in all of my affairs and in repentance.
Qur'an 42:10 — trans. Hilali & Khan

And we have referred this matter back — that is, the celebration of birthdays (mawlids) — to the Book of Allah, Glorious is He, and We found that He commands us to follow the Messenger in what he brought, and warns us against what he forbade, and informs us that Allah, glorified is He, has completed the religion for this ummah, and this celebration is not among what the Messenger brought it would then not be part of the religion which Allah completed for us, and which He commanded us to follow the Messenger in.
and we have also referred that back to the sunnah of the Messenger We did not find in it that he did it, nor that he commanded it, nor that his Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, did it, and by this we know that it is not part of the religion, but rather it is one of the newly invented innovations, and one of the ways of imitating the People of the Book among the Jews and Christians in their festivals. By this it becomes clear to everyone who has the least insight, desire for the truth, and fairness in seeking it, that celebrating the mawlids is not part of the religion of Islam, but rather it is one of the newly invented innovations which Allah, Glorified be He, and His Messenger by abandoning it and being cautious of it.
It is not fitting for a sensible person to be deceived by the large number of people who do it in various regions, for the truth is not known by the large number of those who do it, but rather it is known by the legal proofs, as He, the Exalted, said concerning the Jews and the Christians:
And they say, "None shall enter Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian." These are their own desires. Say (O Muhammad Peace be upon him), "Produce your proof if you are truthful."
Qur'an 2:111 — trans. Hilali & Khan
And the Most High said:
And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you far away from Allah's Path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie.
Qur'an 6:116 — trans. Hilali & Khan
The verse.
Then most of these celebrations of the mawlid - besides being an innovation - are not free of containing other evils as well, such as the intermingling of women with men, the use of songs and musical instruments, the drinking of intoxicants and drugs, and other such evils. And there may occur in them something even greater than that, namely major shirk, through excessiveness in exalting the Messenger of Allah or other than him among the awliya, invoking him and seeking help through him, asking him for aid, and believing that he knows the unseen, and similar matters of kufr that many people engage in during their celebration of the birth of the Prophet and others whom they call awliya, and it has been authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah He said: Beware of extremism in religion, for it was extremism in religion that destroyed those who came before you. And he ﷺ said: Do not extol me excessively as the Christians extolled the son of Mary; I am only a slave, so say: the slave of Allah and His Messenger. Al-Bukhari transmitted it in his Sahih, from the hadith of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him.
And among the astonishing and strange matters is that many people are active and diligent in attending these innovated celebrations, and defend them, while neglecting what Allah has made wajib upon them of attending the Friday and congregational prayers, giving no attention to that, and not regarding it as a grave evil act they have committed. There is no doubt that this stems from weakness of iman, paucity of insight, and the abundance of what has settled upon the hearts of the various kinds of sins and transgressions. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for all Muslims.
And among that: some of them think that the Messenger of Allah It attends the mawlid celebration, and for this reason they stand for him greeting him and welcoming him, and this is among the greatest of falsehoods and the ugliest of ignorance, for indeed the Messenger does not come out of his grave before the Day of Resurrection, and does not have contact with anyone among the people, and does not attend their gatherings; rather, he remains in his grave until the Day of Resurrection, while his soul is in the highest 'Illiyyin with his Lord in the abode of honor, as Allah the Exalted said in Surat al-Mu'minun:
(15) After that, surely, you will die. (16) Then (again), surely, you will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection.
Qur'an 23:15-16 — trans. Hilali & Khan
and the Prophet said : I am the first for whom the grave will split open on the Day of Resurrection, and I am the first intercessor and the first to have intercession accepted.upon him from his Lord be the most excellent salah and peace.
This noble verse, and the honorable hadith, and what has come in their meaning of verses and hadiths, all indicate that the Prophet and other dead people — they only come forth from their graves on the Day of Resurrection, and this is a matter upon which the scholars of the Muslims are agreed, with no dispute among them. So it behooves every Muslim to be alert to these matters and to be wary of what the ignorant and those like them have introduced of innovations and superstitions for which Allah has sent down no authority. Allah is the One from Whom help is sought, and upon Him is reliance, and there is no power and no strength except through Him.
and blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah It is among the most excellent of acts of devotion, and among the righteous deeds, as Allah, the Exalted, said:
Allah sends His Salat (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet (Muhammad) and also His angels too (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salat on (ask Allah to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation i.e. AsSalamu 'Alaikum).
Qur'an 33:56 — trans. Hilali & Khan
The Prophet said : Whoever sends salah upon me once, Allah will send salah upon him ten times for it. It is prescribed at all times, and emphasized at the end of every salah, indeed obligatory according to a group of the people of knowledge in the last tashahhud of every salah, and an emphasized sunnah in many places, among them after the adhan, whenever he ﷺ is mentioned, and on the day and night of Friday, as many hadiths indicate.
It is Allah who is asked to grant us and all Muslims success in understanding His religion and steadfastness upon it, and to bless all with adherence to the sunnah and wariness of innovation; indeed He is Generous, Bountiful. And may Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and upon his family and companions.[1].
